Mr. Mottola is a highly-experienced associate in the firm's Environmental Law Department. He regularly serves industrial and commercial clients in brownfields redevelopment, site remediation, real estate and corporate transactions, site plan and zoning approvals, regulatory compliance and permitting, environmental insurance, and remediation construction contracts. Frequently he appears before the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, EPA, and municipal zoning and planning boards. He has served in enforcement and litigated matters relating to land use regulation, hazardous waste, underground storage tanks, mold contamination, the New Jersey Spill Compensation and Control Act, and CERCLA (Superfund).
Prior to his legal practice, Mr. Mottola was a geologist and project manager for a national environmental engineering and consulting firm. With over ten years experience as a consultant, he has breadth of knowledge and appreciation for the technical issues of environmental and land use and construction law which he brings to his law practice.
Mr. Mottola is in demand as a speaker on environmental issues. For the Rutgers-Cook College Continuing Professional Education Program, he has spoken on Environmental Law and Regulation. Subjects of his presentations have included the Industrial Site Recovery Act (ISRA) (February 2003), Solid and Hazardous Waste annually (February 2004-2007, 2010). He was a featured speaker on Land Use Regulation and Redevelopment in June 2009. In November 2009, he presented a legal analysis of New Jersey’s new Licensed Site Remediation Professional Program at the New Jersey Environmental Health and Safety and Homeland Security Professional Development Conference. His presentations to professional associations have included Environmental Audits to the New Jersey Hospital Association in May 2005, and Environmental Due Diligence in Business and Real Estate Transactions to the Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists in September 2005.
Mentoring and education are integral parts of Mr. Mottola’s professional life. He is a founding member of the Justice Stewart G. Pollock Environmental American Inn of Court, one of only two environmental Inns in the County. The Inn’s mission includes professional development and mentoring in the law, especially environmental law. He is a Barrister of the Inn and serves on its Executive Committee in the leadership role of Administrator of the Inn. In that capacity, he has led instructional programs presented to members on a variety of environmental topics. He designed and teaches an on-line course in Environmental Law at the Charter Oak State College in Connecticut. In April 2005 and March 2009, he was a featured speaker at Montclair State University’s Environmental Management Lecture series.
