Bressler principal Stephen Knox was featured in the Montclair Times article, “Montclair Civil Rights Commission Discusses Lackawanna Plaza’s Lack of Supermarket,” by Ricardo Kaulessar, on May 22, 2017.

The article focuses on the lack of a supermarket in Lackawanna Plaza and how it is being considered a civil rights issue. The Montclair Civil Rights Commission (‘CRC’) believes that it is imperative to have an affordable supermarket located in the Lackawanna Plaza. At the last meeting, the committee discussed the absence of a supermarket as a civil rights issue. Some CRC members believe that the absence of a supermarket within walking distance of many Fourth Ward residents falls under the purview of the Civil Rights Commission – transportation access to food is a civil rights issue. Stephen Knox, a member of the CRC, joined the discussions and inquired about what it would take to get a supermarket in the town.

The Montclair Civil Rights Commission serves as an advisory board to the Township Council and recommends programs designed to eliminate discrimination, addresses problems involving tensions in the community and reviews the Affirmative Action Policy.
