The WannaCry cryptoworm infected over 230,000 computers in 150 countries in May 2017. Within weeks, its cousins, the Petya and NotPetya ransomware attack crippled computer networks in Europe and the U.S. After recent ransomware attacks and earlier data breaches at Yahoo! Inc., the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Target Corp., Sony Corp., health-care companies, private law firms, and other entities, the public may be resigned to companies and governments being unable to protect against cyberattacks. Eliminating data breaches is virtually impossible. Nevertheless, regulatory changes and a shift to treating data security as an enterprise risk may slow hackers down in the near term.
