In efforts to keep financial and legal professionals apprised of the constantly evolving information in the world of senior and vulnerable investors, we are excited to share the news that The North American Securities Administrators Association (“NASAA”) is launching a new webcast series.

NASAA is an association of state securities administrators who are charged with the responsibility to protect consumers who purchase securities or investment advice.  NASAA has long been a leader in the effort to prevent financial exploitation of vulnerable investors.  In 2016, it drafted a model act that, if adopted, would encourage firms to report such exploitation and provide tools with which firms could delay disbursements in matters involving suspected exploitation.  Over thirty-five states and FINRA have since adopted some version of such a report and hold law.  These efforts have unquestionably led to the prevention of significant losses to the senior investor community.

With the launch of its new webcast series, NASAA’s Senior Issues and Diminished Capacity Committee Presents, NASAA is now taking another significant step in its efforts to prevent financial exploitation of vulnerable investors.  NASAA’s aim for the webcast is to “provide an inclusive platform for learning from the best and brightest minds who will discuss issues that matter most to those dealing with at-risk investors.”  The webcast is free and open to anyone who is interested in learning more about at-risk investor protection issues.

The premiere episode debuts on February 3, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. EDT.  Registration is available here.  The first episode is entitled Cognition, Problems and Solutions, and will focus on new understandings of the brain and related cognition issues. Presenters will include regulators from the FINRA Foundation, the Nova Scotia Securities Commission, the New Brunswick Financial and Consumer Services Commission, and the Ontario Securities Commission as well as a professor of human development and family science who serves as the Director of the Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology.  Viewers will also hear from Melanie Senter Lubin (NASAA President and Commissioner, Maryland Division of Securities) and Kristen Standifer (Chair of the NASAA Senior Issues and Diminished Capacity Committee, Washington Securities Division).  Former Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C. Principal Richard Szuch (Vice-Chair of the NASAA Senior Issues and Diminished Capacity Committee, New Jersey Bureau of Securities) will serve as the program host.

Bressler’s Senior and Vulnerable Investor Group is excited about the new webcast series and encourages firms, advisors, and anyone else interested in protecting seniors and vulnerable clients to tune in.
