Overview

Michael Shifrin is Counsel in our firm's Insurance Practice Group.  Michael serves as a trusted advisor to property and casualty insurers in complex first-party property disputes, coverage litigation, and other high-exposure matters throughout Florida. With experience spanning in-house and outside-counsel roles, Michael has successfully litigated thousands of cases and is relied upon by insurers for his ability to combine strategic advocacy with disciplined judgment to deliver efficient, outcome-driven resolutions.

Michael is routinely entrusted with large, high-volume claim portfolios involving hurricane losses, water damage claims, roofing disputes, appraisal and ordinance or law issues, assignment of benefits litigation, and allegations of bad faith. His approach is distinguished by his ability to develop case-dispositive factual records through surgical examinations under oath and depositions of plaintiffs, public adjusters, contractors, mitigation companies, and other third parties. This meticulous fact development has repeatedly exposed fraudulent schemes, material misrepresentations, and unlawful claims practices, resulting in dismissals with prejudice, dispositive rulings, successful arbitrations, regulatory referrals, substantial exposure reductions for insurer clients, and recovery of attorneys’ fees and taxable costs.

Michael’s strategy is informed by a sophisticated understanding of how claims decisions affect loss ratios, reserve integrity, fee exposure, and long-term portfolio performance metrics. Prior to joining private practice, Michael served as in-house counsel for a Florida insurance carrier, where he was recognized for achieving the highest win rate and lowest expense ratio within the legal department. That experience continues to shape his practical, carrier-aligned approach to litigation and claims strategy.

In addition to his litigation practice, Michael is regularly called upon to train adjusters and attorneys on fraud detection and best practices for preserving defensible coverage positions under Florida’s evolving insurance framework. He is a frequent speaker at insurance industry conferences and continuing education programs on claim investigation and advanced litigation strategy, including deposition and EUO preparation.  Michael’s success in uncovering fraudulent claims earned him a nomination for “Insurance Industry Fraud Fighter of the Year” by the Florida Insurance Fraud Education Committee.

Michael earned his J.D. from Florida International University College of Law after graduating summa cum laude from the University of Florida. During law school, he completed a judicial internship in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He remains actively engaged in community leadership, serving as the Secretary and Treasurer of Affordable Communities of Florida, Inc., which focuses on economic development and affordable-housing initiatives throughout the state. Michael also serves on the Board of Directors of Ten North Group, where he helps oversee the management of more than $100 million in assets and 2,500+ affordable-housing units supporting community revitalization, economic empowerment and sustainable community development initiatives.
